Mountain rivers respond to strong earthquakes by rapidly aggrading to accommodate excess sediment delivered by co-seismic landslides. Detailed sediment budgets indicate that rivers need several years to decades to recover from seismic disturbances, depending on how recovery is defined. We examine three principal proxies of river recovery after earthquake-induced sediment pulses around Pokhara, Nepal's second largest city. Freshly exhumed cohorts of floodplain trees in growth position indicate rapid and pulsed sedimentation that formed a fan covering 150 km2 in a Lesser Himalayan basin with tens of metres of debris between the 11th and 15th centuries AD. Radiocarbon dates of buried trees are consistent with those of nearby valley deposits linked to major medieval earthquakes, such that we can estimate average rates of re-incision since. We combine high-resolution digital elevation data, geodetic field surveys, aerial photos, and dated tree trunks to reconstruct geomorphic marker surfaces. The volumes of sediment relative to these surfaces require average net sediment yields of up to 4200 t km–2 yr–1 for the 650 years since the last inferred earthquake-triggered sediment pulse. The lithological composition of channel bedload differs from that of local bedrock, confirming that rivers are still mostly evacuating medieval valley fills, locally incising at rates of up to 0.2 m yr–1. Pronounced knickpoints and epigenetic gorges at tributary junctions further illustrate the protracted fluvial response; only the distal portions of the earthquake-derived sediment wedges have been cut to near their base. Our results challenge the notion that mountain rivers recover speedily from earthquakes within years to decades. The valley fills around Pokhara show that even highly erosive Himalayan rivers may need more than several centuries to adjust to catastrophic perturbations. Our results motivate some rethinking of post-seismic hazard appraisals and infrastructural planning in active mountain regions. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This study aims to examine how future climate, temperature and precipitation specifically, are expected to change under the A2, A1B, and B1 emission scenarios over the six states that make up the Southern Climate Impacts Planning Program (SCIPP): Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Tennessee, and Mississippi. SCIPP is a member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-funded Regional Integrated Sciences and Assessments network, a program which aims to better connect climate-related scientific research with in-the-field decision-making processes. The results of the study found that the average temperature over the study area is anticipated to increase by 1.7°C to 2.4°C in the twenty-first century based on the different emission scenarios with a rate of change that is more pronounced during the second half of the century. Summer and fall seasons are projected to have more significant temperature increases, while the northwestern portions of the region are projected to experience more significant increases than the Gulf coast region. Precipitation projections, conversely, do not exhibit a discernible upward or downward trend. Late twenty-first century exhibits slightly more precipitation than the early century, based on the A1B and B1 scenario, and fall and winter are projected to become wetter than the late twentieth century as a whole. Climate changes on the city level show that greater warming will happened in inland cities such as Oklahoma City and El Paso, and heavier precipitation in Nashville. These changes have profound implications for local water resources management as well as broader regional decision making. These results represent an initial phase of a broader study that is being undertaken to assist SCIPP regional and local water planning efforts in an effort to more closely link climate modeling to longer-term water resources management and to continue assessing climate change impacts on regional hazards management in the South.  相似文献

The Himalayas are a key location for understanding centennial‐ to millennial‐scale variations in the Asian monsoon, yet few studies of the late Holocene have been conducted in this sensitive area. Direct evidence for shifts in monsoonal wind strength is often limited to marine proxy records, while terrestrial reconstructions (e.g. lake levels and spleothems) focus on precipitation. Here, we present the first evidence of terrestrial summer monsoon wind strength changes from Lake Rara, western Nepal, based on Mn/Ti ratios, a proxy for lake stratification. These data indicate a link between the Arabian Sea and the Himalayas, suggesting that centennial‐ to millennial‐scale changes in wind strength occurred synchronously. Distinct similarity is also observed between Lake Rara and the southern part of China, which may support previous suggestions that the southern part of China is influenced by Indian summer monsoon. Co‐digestion studies were carried out for biogas generation using fleshings as the primary substrate and a mixture of primary and secondary sludge generated during the treatment of tannery wastewater as the co‐substrate. Steapsin, a commercial grade lipase, was added to enhance the hydrolysis in anaerobic co‐digestion. The lipase dosages used were ranging between 0.25 and 1.0 g for a volatile solids input of 7.5 g. The performance of the co‐digestion was assessed from the volume of biogas generated. Experimental results revealed an optimum lipase dosage of about 0.75 g. At this dosage, the biogas generation was observed to increase by about 15% compared to that in the control without adding lipase. Further, the digestion with lipase addition was observed faster since the digestion period was reduced about 30%. This means that the capacity of the digester could also be reduced about 30% leading to savings in its installation cost.  相似文献

When grains of a sediment sample are separated by sieving into a number of size classes, the weight of the grains belonging to a particular size-class is called the weight frequency of that class. That the weight frequencies cannot be used as simple frequencies for the calculation of the mean and standard deviation of size of grains is well known. A method is developed in this paper for estimating these two as well as a third parameter, named shape parameter, by minimizing a quadratic form that arises naturally as an analogue of the 2 statistic. Two fully worked out numerical examples, with simulated data, are presented to illustrate the method. A computer program in FORTRAN language is also appended. Comparative study shows that the quicker conventional method used by geologists may produce reasonably good estimates of standard deviation when the sample size is large, but the estimates of mean may show large deviations.  相似文献

The gradient coupling within the ionospheric plasma in the presence of local variation of atmospheric heating and other modifications during high power radio wave propagation has been studied. The appropriate form of coupled equations for the modified situation is obtained. The electromagnetic and acoustic modes of wave propagation have been separated and solved, by the WKB method. Debris flow disaster at Larcha, upper Bhotekoshi Valley, central Nepal   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Abstract   Damage, destruction and casualties related to landslide and debris flow are common phenomena in the Himalaya, especially during the summer monsoon. This fact was tragically illustrated on 22 July 1996, when Larcha, situated at the 109-km mark of the Arniko Highway, upper Bhotekoshi Valley, central Nepal, experienced a catastrophic debris flow powered by the Bhairab Kunda Stream. Of the 22 houses in Larcha, 16 were swept away, two were partially damaged and 54 people were killed in a matter of a few minutes. The event attracted attention when media linked it to a glacial lake outburst flood as a result of the fact that the source of the stream is a glacial lake. To understand the cause, initiation mechanism and deposition process, the basin area was studied from geological, geomorphologic and engineering geological points of view and the role of precipitation was evaluated. A combination of rainfall, runoff from cliff faces and stream undercutting triggered failure of the bedrock and colluvium, both on the dip and counter-dip slopes, 500 m upstream from the highway. The landslide debris dammed the channel, which was eventually breached, and deposited approximately 104 000 m3 of coarse debris, dominated by the metasediments of the Lesser Himalayan origin, and overwhelmed the village of Larcha. The debris deposit was studied for clast size, composition, texture and dimensions. Lack of sorting and the presence of abundant silt and clay in the source area helped in the initiation of debris flow. The abundance of the Lesser Himalayan metasediment clasts together with the absence of debris traces upstream from the landslide site ruled out the possibility of a glacial lake outburst flood. The disaster was a result of landslide damming triggered by precipitation and stream undercutting and sudden bursting.  相似文献

Some anomalous TV receptions in India on band I have been interpreted as being propagated viaF-layer artificially modified by high power broadcast transmitters. In this paper, the possibility of VHF communication by artificially modifiedE-layer is discussed. The presented theoretical analysis shows that high-power broadcast trasmitters can produce substantial changes in temperature and ionisation in theE-layer. The rate of energy transfer from the wave to the medium particles has also been computed. Model calculations are made for a transmitter located near Calcutta. The possibility of the extra-ionisation producing field-aligned structures to support VHF communication is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Observed flyrock distances for 47 blasts at six limestone quarries along with blast design parameters are presented. The influence of blasthole diameter, burden, stemming length, powder factor, the condition of blastholes (dry or wet) and the initiation systems on generation of flyrock is analysed and the most critical parameters for flyrock control are identified. Based on the analysis of results, suggestions are given to minimise the flyrock hazards at limestone quarries.  相似文献

With an objective to understand the behaviour of pore water pressure around large underground openings, piezometers were installed in the rock around the desanding chambers, surge shaft, its drainage galleries, and the transformer cavern of a large hydro-electric project. The monitored data indicated that the pore water pressure was insignificant in the rock surrounding the desanding chambers prior to lining. On completion of the concrete lining of the chambers, the maximum pore water pressure was about 50 kPa as the flow of water was restricted. When one of the desanding chambers was charged with water, the piezometers around it indicated an excessive increase in the pore water pressure due to seepage of water from the chamber. Thus the piezometer readings were useful in taking appropriate remedial measures. In the surge shaft, higher values of pore water pressure were recorded on the hill side of the shaft as compared to the valley side. In one of the drainage galleries, the pore water pressure gradually increased to 450 kPa, which was released by drilling relief holes in the area. In the other drainage gallery, no significant change in the pore water was recorded. In the transformer cavern, the recorded pore water pressures were within 20 kPa.  相似文献
